Do You Have Paraskevidekatriaphobia – Fear of Friday the 13th

Every year many, many people wake in fear of Friday the 13th. They won’t go to work, either calling in sick or taking a day of vacation.  This fear is so strong in some people, that they don’t even get out of bed on Friday the 13th. Unfortunately, if you have this fear, Friday the 13th will occur three times this year – February, March and November.

Friday the 13th is just one form of triskaidekaphobia, fear of the number 13, which manifests itself in many ways:

  • Some people don’t drive on Friday the 13th
  • Many office buildings in the United States have no 13th floor
  • Roads are not numbered 13
  • Many hospitals don’t have a room 13
  • Some airport terminals skip gate number 13
  • Some airlines skip row number 13
  • #13 jersey is rare in sports

I know one thing that has not been affected by this fear and that is box office receipts for the Friday the 13th Movies.  Go figure.

Personally, I find this a fascinating fear.  I don’t understand it because to me it seems so irrational.  Although, as I child, I did fear the movie, 13 Ghosts.

Do you have triskaidekaphonia?  If so why not share some other ways fear of the number 13 affects your life.  Have a good day!
