There’s a lot of chatter going on about Governor Mark Sanford and his extra-marital affair. It’s been on the news and entertainment programs. It’s been blogged and tweeted. The atmosphere has been saturated with the affair itself. Instead of focusing on the affair, I want to take a different approach to the Sanford fiasco and talk about The Lie.
Stupid Is As Stupid Does
As I watched all of the network news, Entertainment Tonight and read the many tweets about Governor Mark Sanford, all I could hear was these words from that famous philosopher, Forrest Gump – stupid is as stupid does. And what Governor Sanford did was really, really stupid. I’m not talking about his cheating on his wife (that’s a given), I’m talking about the stupid lie he told and the stupid approach he took for his illicit liaison.
How stupid is he? Let me count the ways:
- He’s the governor of South Carolina. Like every other politician in a high office, someone always has to know where you are. You can’t just disappear.
- I’m going to hike the Appalachian Trail – but, I’m gonna leave my car with all of my hiking gear in plain sight at the airport.
- Oops, I changed my mind and decided to go someplace more exotic.
- Double oops, I forgot it was Father’s Day weekend
- No, I’m not whipped, I just wanted some alone time
Shall I continue? Who knows a politician who can’t come up with a believable lie? Quite frankly, you don’t have to be a politician to come up with a good lie. Anyone who has ever cheated was able to come up with a creative lie that sounded believable for a little while. This guy couldn’t conjure up a lie that held water for one day. It usually takes several days, weeks or months for the truth to finally come out.
All in all, I think this guy is probably pretty honest with a modicum of integrity. Otherwise, he could have come up with better lies and held out a lot longer.
I understand that the Governor’s wife wants to work things out and I think he should take her lead, settle down and be a good husband and father. Believe me, his players card has been revoked.
okay he needs to stop talking so much and publicly. i have no problem with trying to work things out in a marriage, everybody gets 1 mess up, but the more stuff that comes out, the worse off he looks….and makes me wonder if their marriage can be saved. i hope so, but he would have to some major changing.
