My Problem With Thesis Theme for WordPress

Right now this blog is a work in progress.  After months of reading all of the accolades about its flexibility and easy  customization, I purchased the Thesis Theme for WordPress.  It probably deserves all of the hype it has received if you know what you are doing.

With my first two blogs I taught myself a little html and learned how to edit some of the CSS code to make very basic changes.  But this is completely different.  This theme is customized with something called hooks.  Can you hear the crickets chirping?  What is a hook!

After spending several hours reading the Thesis Tutorial and trying to figure this thing out I decided to do a search for “How to use Thesis Theme,” “Instructions for Thesis Theme,” and finally “Thesis Theme for Dummies.”  As much as I hate that word, it was the one that hit the jackpot.

Rae Hoffman over at sugarrae.com wrote a “Thesis Tutorial – Hooks for Dummies.”  OK, I read it, but still don’t get it.  If you are having a problem like I am, but have more understanding of web design, check out her article.  It is very detailed and an excellent article.

As far as I am concerned, Thesis Theme is great for people who have some experience in web design, coding, etc.  It is unlike any theme I’ve seen and it has a lot of options.  However, if you are like me, it will be very frustrating.  But, I will not be was defeated.  Eventually, this blog will have the look that I want.

Keep checking back, you’ll see.

I agree. I have no clue how to use hooks despite reading all about them. I’m good with html and CSS but hooks?…….NOT!

Hi Tom, thanks for being my first commenter, glad you found me. Thesis is throwing me for a loop. I’ve been able to muddle through some other themes but this is a whole nother animal. I hope you’re having more luck than I am.

Well Valerie……I am slowly figuring out hooks. Very slowly. The link you provided from Rae Hoffman helped……and I was able to add a “follow me on twitter” graphic to my blog. Not an earth shattering development……but…..it’s a small step forward.

Hi Valerie & Tom, I too use Thesis and have figured out how to do a few things just by searching for tutorials, and playing around with code. There is now a really good plugin for thesis that makes it even easier to insert and code without having to know all the hook jumble – Thesis Openhook Plugin. If you need any other help feel free to visit my blog and leave comments, or tweet me @ThoughtFarm.

Here. Here. It would be nice if their technical support existed, rather than a support forum. The forum has be helpful but it doesn’t replace a standalone support unit. The theme is beautiful but the company support could use some work. I thought using TT would be an easy experience for a backend (css, etc) novice, boy was I wrong. I guess I’ll become a CSS professional, or get a major headache trying. :)

hprobs, we need to start a “We Thought Thesis Would Be Easy Club.” I did learn to do some basic css by working with my other WordPress blogs, but Thesis uses a css stylesheet and hooks. Right now I’m having trouble finding the time to work on it, but eventually I will.

I wish you much luck. :D

I bought Thesis and use it on my load of BS blog. I only use it on that blog because I’m of the generation where you don’t throw anything away that you’ve paid for unless you have to. I was planing to buy the developers version later on if it turned out to be as easy as they made it out to be. It wasn’t so I didn’t.

And so the search for a theme that even a ‘dummy’ could use, one where you didn’t need to know HOOKS or any other code, went on. It took awhile but I found it and I now use it on all my blogs except for the Thesis run Load Of BS blog

I read so much hype and how easy Thesis is to use, I purchased the developer’s option. But guess what? I was hugely disappointed when i couldn’t even install it, what more to learn to use the functions in it. And I found lots of people who purchased it having the same problem from the support forum. It’s definitely one thing that wasn’t hyped out. Now I wonder what I can do…many people still don’t have the answers to have it properly installed and working.

I still have some unresolved issues at the Forum. Luckily for me it’s only minor, but still I expected a whole lot more help after all the hype.

I am about to launch a new political news blog and have been researching appropriate themes for a professional and engaging look, flexibility in terms of design, and SEO tools included. Thesis seems to offer that, and I’m debating whether to purchase it (and if so, whether the personal or developers version).

As a precaution, I searched Google for “problems with Thesis” and wound up here. It appears to have been about a year since you wrote the post, Valerie, and I wanted to ask how you feel about Thesis now. (It appears you’re still using it.) Others who’ve commented here before also, how do you now feel about Thesis? Are hooks still an issue with the theme?

I’m with Tony, above. It’s now April 2010 and I’m considering buying Thesis. Never heard of “hooks” before; are they still a problem? Have some of your issues been resolved?
